Frequently Asked Questions

In addition to Fall term, are students also admitted during the spring or summer semesters?

We strongly encourage students to begin their program during the fall semester. This allows you to join with a cohort of incoming students and you have the best prospect for funding consideration.  Students who wish to begin in the spring should contact the graduate coordinator prior to applying.

What graduate degrees do you offer?

The department offers four graduate degrees in Geography: PhD, PhD ICON, Master’s of Science, and Master’s of Arts

How do I apply?

All applications for Geography Graduate Programs are submitted electronically to the University of Georgia Graduate School. Links to begin your application can be found here.

Is it possible to obtain an application fee waiver?

The application fees are set by the graduate school.  Fee waivers are available to applicants participating in certain programs. See this Graduate School page for those programs. Please note: the Geography Department cannot reduce nor waive the application fee.

What English language proficiency scores are accepted?

The University of Georgia will accept satisfactory scores on either the TOEFL or IELTS language proficiency examinations for admission to graduate school. Test scores cannot be more than two years old. Scores must be submitted to the Graduate School directly from these agencies. Follow this link for more information. As of July 1, 2023, the Duolingo English Test will no longer be accepted as a test of English proficiency in graduate admissions. This change will be effective starting with the Fall 2024 admissions cycle.

Is it required to contact a faculty research advisor before being granted admission?

It is not required.  However, we highly recommend that you reach out to Geography faculty with common interests prior to applying. This helps ensure our program can accommodate your research interests.  Also, if you do connect with a professor or professors with common research interests, please mention this in your personal statement.

When will I know if I have been accepted to the doctoral program?

Decisions are normally made by March, although some students may be admitted later.

How do I apply for funding?

As you fill out the application, there is a section titled, “Additional Information” and within that section there is a “Financial Assistance” category containing the question: “Do you wish to be considered for financial assistance from your academic program?” where you will then answer ‘Yes’ if you wish to be considered.

As a prospective international student, are there extra materials needed for my application?

There may be supplemental items needed for international applicants, which can be found at the Graduate School website.
