Photo: Graduate Teaching Assistant Contact info Email: amm27594@uga.edu Research Interests: Geographies of religion, legal geography, cultural and historical geography, sanctuary practice, transitioning sacred spaces, the nature of the sacred and the profane, immigration, alternative modernities Alexa is a human geographer interested in the history and development of the concept of sanctuary space in both its sacred and secular forms, and in the disparate ways the state renders sanctuary spaces il/legitimate across time and space. Alexa's current work focuses on the concept of sanctuary space within the context of historic and contemporary US immigration policy with a particular focus on Latin and Central American political refugees and the mobilization of faith-based organizations who advocate for legal and practical change in support of these groups in light of personal beliefs and international law.
