Dr Nik Heynen’s long time partnership with Saltwater Geechee activist Maurice Bailey and the Sapelo Island Cultural and Revitalization Society is bearing fruit – sugar, actually.  SICAR’s agricultural project is to reestablish heritage crops on Sapelo Island in order to enable a future for Gullah/Geechee people in the face of development on the island.  Their work was recently profiled in the New York Times.
In an historic first for UGA, On October 2, the SPOC Satellite built by students and faculty in the Small Satellite Research Laboratory was launched aboard an Antares rocket headed for the International Space Station. On November 5, SPOC was deployed from the ISS, and began transmitting data within hours of launch. SSRL director Dr. Deepak Mishra and Associate Director Dr. David Cotten have helped to make history.  
The first launch is scheduled for late 2019 for one of two cube satellites made by the Small Satellite Research Laboratory at the University of Georgia. Cube satellites, otherwise known as CubeSats, weigh less than three pounds and are approximately the size of a loaf of bread.
Over 40% of Greenland experienced melting Thursday, with total ice loss estimated to be more than 2 gigatons (equal to 2 billion tons) on just that day alone.
